Johanna from Sweeney Todd is such an interesting song because it has a very airy and bright tone, but the action on the stage is incredibly dark and violent. This was an interesting juxtaposition from a cinematography point of view. I tried to create a look that was partially inspired by Vermeer and other dutch painters.
The resulting shadows came out nice and soft. I felt that it was important that we could still see the part of the face that was in shadow, even just a little bit. That prevents the scene from being too harsh.
